That day I left university for home at 4pm. My home is at 15 minutes walk from my university but I decided to take a bus to home which is my normal routine. As I reached at the bus stop the glimpse there made me wonder, more than hundred people were standing there waiting for the bus. I realized that it is output of traffic jam as a result of some jalsa but the conditions of people were miserable. I decided to move towards next bus stop but got signs of regret as there were bundle of people as well at next three points. Then I decided to move on my own foots, as I reached at the petrol pump near my home there I saw long lines of cars in the thirst of CNG. I keep moving towards destiny, when I enter in the territory of my clan there was only darkness that was not signs of missionaries or locusts in the heart of Africa but it was the curse of our Government “The Loadsheding”. I laughed a bit and start moving towards my home with words “na bijli he na pani he phir b dil Pakistani he” :-)

YJS SOCIETY VISITED CARTOON EXHIBITION AT LAHORE PRESS CLUB

Annual Dinner

Young Journalist Society arranged a tour of Cartoon Exhibition of ANWAR ALI (Known as NANNA) in Lahore Press Club. This exhibition was arranged to pay tribute to Anwar Ali who was the first among the early cartoonists of Pakistan who uses his talent to give awareness about social and political issues to the general public through his talent.

Shaukat Mehmood, Ijaz Anwar, Nasrullah , Sarmad Bashir, Fiqa , Javed Iqbal, Junaid Khawaja and Hameed Akhtar paid homage to Anwar Ali. Dr. Ijaz Anwar told about cartoons and creations of him and his father. At the end Aurangzaib thanked and appreciated the Society.

A visit to PTV on January 8th, 2011. A group of twenty five students with Ms Ume-e-Amara incharge of YJS visited PTV Lahore Station. President (CBA) of PTV Mr. Jahangir Khan along PRO Mr. Hayat Saif with others officials welcomed the YJS group. The group visited PTV building under the guidance of Mr. Hayat Said PRO PTV. The YJS group visited studio A, studio B, get up room, ward robe and engineering department. Mr. hayat showed different sets of dramas and programs. While in engineering department Chief engineer, Mr. Amjad Gill gave lecture on process of transmission and answered the different questions asked by the students. Afterwards Mr. Hayat showed the transmission process, Control room, master control room and News room. During all this Mr. Hayat answered the questions asked by the students on different spots. He appreciated the student’s spirit and praised the work of YJS. At the end Mr. Jahangir Khan CBA president gave refreshment to students. He discussed different issued regarding the works and processes of PTV with students. He appreciated student’s behavior during trip. They said farewell at the gate.

Young Journalist Society in GCU hosts interactive session with editors, journalists.

Government College University (GCU) Young Journalists Society (YJS), on Thursday, hosted an interactive session with eminent editors, columnists and journalists, titled “Evening to Remember”, on the issue “Challenges confronting fourth pillar of state”.

Daily Times Editor Rashed Rahman, Daily Pakistan Editor Mujeebur Rahman Shami and renowned anchorperson and columnist Aftab Iqbal were the chief guests of the event. GCU Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Ikramul Haq was also present on the occasion. While addressing the audience, Rashed Rahman said that a historic turning point occurred when the printing press was invented, which was soon followed by the advent of newspapers. He said that the printing press played a crucial role, both in the pre-partition and post-partition periods.

“The journalistic world today has been introduced to two new terms, namely new media and old media,” he said, adding that new media is the most democratic form of media. He added that during General Ziaul Haq’s regime in 1980s, a term had been invented, called “Lifafa Journalism”.

Rahman further said that media was losing the country’s youth as its audience and if the trend continued, it would become very difficult to steer them back towards fields of media and journalism. He also shared some of his student life memories when he was a student at GCU and also a member of GCU’s Dramatic Club.

Separately, Mujeebur Rahman Shami said that free media reflected the true picture of a society and only countries having complete media freedom could excel in all spheres of life. He added, “The growth of electronic media over the past few decades has been very rapid in Pakistan. The media can shape and have deep impact on public opinion.”

Meanwhile, Aftab Iqbal said also shared some memories of his student life at GCU. “In my opinion, the major challenge we face at the moment is of maintaining high quality news reports and upholding journalistic values in such a small yet extremely competitive market,” he said. Speaking at the event, Ikramul Haq said that the media was a watchdog of public interest, carrier of information, promoter of a free and balanced debate, and was the most dynamic institution representing the civil society.

Towards the end, Mujeebur Rehman Shami and Rashed Rahman distributed shields amongst the members of Lahore Education Reporters Association (LERA) and YJS members. The event was followed by dinner and a musical night.

Journey With Young Journalist Society

I was selected as an Information Sectary in Young Journalist Society (YJS) for the session (2010-2011). The journey was really fruitful; I organized approximately 15 events as an information sectary. The journey ends with an annual dinner. I want to share few memories:

Inter University Photo Journalism Contest

: Photo Contest highlights miseries in underprivileged professions by Young Journalist Society GCU Lahore on Saturday, 29 January 2011 at 12:01

The Inter-University Photo Journalism Competition & Exhibition 2011 Thursday highlighted the miseries of people attached with “unprivileged professions” in our society. The exhibition, organized by the Government College University Lahore Young Journalists Society (GCU YJS) on the theme of “unprivileged professions”, put on display as many as 31 selected photographers capturing life of child laborers, cobblers, kiln workers, hawkers, linemen, waiters, jokers and circus artists etc.

GCU Dean of Arts and Social Sciences Dr. Khlaid Perviaz was the Chief Guest at the Prize Distribution ceremony of the photo competition, Judged by Lahore Heritage Club President Tahir Malik Yazdani and member of American Photographic Society Muhammad Adnan. The amateur photographers from 11 educational institutions of Lahore including LUMS, National College of Arts, Fatima Jinnah Medical College and Lahore College for Women University took part in the competition.

A picture of a child circus performer playing with fire, captioned “the burning truth”, secured the first position in the competition. The picture was captured by Skindar Hayat from Punjab University. A picture of University of Central Punjab student Junaid Saleem captioned “Still I raise” secured the second position at the competition. Mubashir Ali, a student of FC- a charted University, secured the third prize. He put on display a picture of a female kiln worker

GCU YJS adviser Umme-Amara said that photojournalism is also often considered as unprivileged profession in our society. She said that the competition was aimed at encouraging the students who have great skills and talent to become news photographers.

My photograph was also part of exhibition but not the part of competition as i was part of organizing team. I received certificates for offering my cervices as an information sectary & for participating in exhibition.

She believed that photojournalism, as a profession, is a serious job and demands attention and respect. “After all, it is the photographs accompanying the news that truly help us understand what is going on in the world,” she said. Lahore Heritage Club President Tahir Malik Yazdani said that the profession of photojournalism requires a lot of patience, understanding and skill, and the photojournalists should be appreciated accordingly
